Re-Analysis of "Two Plays" by Lloyd Schwartz

Original Analysis Here:  https://ddcpoetry.blogspot.com/2013/02/analysis-of-plays-by-lloyd-schwartz.html This was a harsh critique of the poem.  I feel I've changed my way of looking at poems.  To me the criticism I wrote felt like I was trying to hard to make a point rather than looking at the poem.  Also, me being so self aware of myself feels like I'm still getting over my nervousness of writing anything at all. Who is "Beatrice Joanna"?  What is the "Changling"?  Who is Thomas Middleton?  Those are the first questions I should ask when reading this.  "The Changeling" Let this be a lesson to look up references in poems.  The first two stanza are exposition that tell the scene of Beatrice realizing her betrothed has been assassinated by Deflores who desires her but she finds repulsive. The second stanza sums up the rest of the play of how Beatrice ends up falling in love with her twin, the ugly assassin. Part 2 of the poem continues a...

Analysis of "To my Oldest Friend, Whose Silence is Like a Death" by Lloyd Schwartz

Poem found here:   "To my Oldest Friend, Whose Silence is Like a Death" by Lloyd Schwartz I'm the silent one in the poem.  Not literally, but I know that I don't talk to people in forever and I don't tell why.  This poem is sentimental -- which is against everything that I was taught how to write as far as content is concerned, but as a reader, this poem hit me pretty hard. The poem is written in couplets with the occasional one off line -- which can easily represent either the "friend" or the "speaker," but first exposition:      In today's paper, a story about our high school drama      teacher evicted from his Carnegie Hall rooftop apartment      made me ache to call you--the only person I know      who'd still remember his talent, his good likes, his self- The line breaks in this poem makes these lines, the end of the first line with "high school drama" to reinforce the connection between the speaker and the ...

Analysis of "Two Plays" by Lloyd Schwartz

Original poem reprinted online here:  "Two Plays" by Lloyd Schwartz Originally read: November 30, 2012 (I don't know) More information about the Poet:  Lloyd Schwartz I want to focus on the last comment I wrote which was: The ending is clever -- it's one of those expected endings.  I guess that's why I am dissapointed [sic]  a bit.  The narrator foreshadows the poem pitch perfect, yet after the second or third read the foreshadowing doesn't keep me interested. Besides the atrocious spelling and grammar errors, I wonder why I thought the way I did when I read it.  So I reread the poem again and the problem for me consisted of two things. 1) Part I was heavy on the exposition.  Exposition is not a bad thing.  Of course I want background on things in writing and in real life.  Example: "Hey did you hear that <insert person here> is in jail for life?" "Oh really, what happened" "Well <insert exposition here about like traffic tick...
